A Page from Geisha & Maiko of Kyoto
In order for people to see exactly what Geisha & Maiko of Kyoto: Beauty, Art, & Dance looks like, I’ve uploaded the cover of the book and a sample page here. The page is from chapter four, “Kimina.”
The chapter contains 18 photographs of Kimina and a long interview with her about topics such as what rehearsals are like for Kyo Odori and Mizuekai, how geiko get chosen to perform certain roles in these major dances, what a typical day is like for her, why she decided to become a geiko, what it was like to start her career as a geiko (not a maiko), and many other topics related to her artistic training.
There are also 11 photos of Kimina in the first chapter of the book, “Miyako Odori, Kyo Odori, and Other Geisha Dances.” This chapter contains photos of the major dances in Gion Kobu and Miyagawa-cho, a brief history and description of the dances, and my personal guide to attending these very special events.
